One of the biggest names in graphic design, David Carson and the founder of Design Matters podcast, Debbie Millman will be headlining this year’s Huiput Creative Festival.
Held at the Clarion Hotel in Helsinki on 5 March, Huiput Creative Festival offers new perspectives for creative industry professionals. The theme for the fourth annual event is positivity.
This year’s keynote speaker is American graphic designer David Carson. Carson, known as the art director of Ray Gun magazine, started the so-called grunge era in typography. He has also received the highest award in graphic design, the AIGA Gold Medal.
In his keynote speech David Carson will talk about his recent work as well as the importance of intuition in creative work.
The festival’s other keynote speaker, Debbie Millman, arrives from New York. The writer, trainer and curator is the founder and host of the podcast Design Matters.

In addition to Carson and Millman, the festival’s speakers include artist and designer Camille Walala, founding member of Dinamo, a Swiss design agency specialising in typefaces, Fabian Harb and an internationally recognised expert in design and innovation, Lauren Currie.
Camille Walala’s projects range from art direction and interior design to civic art and installations.
Helsinki Design Week brings its PechaKucha speech concept to the festival featuring the photographer Heli Blåfield, illustrator Rakastaja Robert and the type designer Lauri Toikka. The festival also features different creative activities. You can experiment with typographic cross-stich and scratching a school desk with TypoCraft, or drawing in Enni Koistinen‘s Embrace the Uglyness workshop. The best of European creative design will be showcased in the Art Directors Club of Europe’s award exhibition. The festival day ends in an afterparty with entertainment by DJ Mekaanikko alias Juuso Koponen.
Fabian Harb will speak at Huiput Creative Festival about Dinamo’s cross-disciplinary cooperation and finding ways to develop, determine and optimise work to a level that leaves room for both creative projects and commercial work.
