This residence was designed by Lars Sonck and Onni Törnqvist, and the discussion follows its Art Nouveau spirit. The apartment was used as a student dormitory during the 1970s, and the big rooms and halls were divided into small single units. The building has been the Icelandic Ambassador’s residence from the year 1999 when it was fully restored to its original style.

At the residence for Iceland, architects Helgi Steinar Helgason and Hilla Rudanko will participate in the Design Diplomacy card game.

Helgi Steinar Helgason is an architect and chairman of the board of the architectural association in Iceland. He leads an architectural agency called Tvíhorf with colleagues. He came back home during the financial crisis when 65% of architects were unemployed. This inspired him to take initiatives in the city to push the discussion about the role of architecture and architects in society.

Hilla Rudanko founded the Rudanko + Kankkunen architect office in 2010 with Anssi Kankkunen after working in the leading architectural offices in Finland and gaining experience abroad in Switzerland and New York. Their method of design is participatory, and they have developed the method as part of the Finnish Uusi Kaupunki design collective.

Seats are limited and registration is binding.

The event is full.

The event is part of the Helsinki Design Week Design Diplomacy discussion series, which open the doors to Helsinki-based ambassadors’ residences. See the participating embassies and their schedules here.
