Located in the historical Kaivopuisto district, the Embassy of Belgium in Helsinki and the residence are under the same roof in a building built in 1970. The unique design is the fruit of Finnish-Belgian cooperation by Roger Bastin and architect couple Lars and Mona Hedman. It resembles Aalto’s late style in the 1950–1960s, specifically with brick as the construction material, and is compact and functional in its idiom.

We will hear an interesting discussion between industrial designer Sep Verboom and Saara Renvall and also from independent art and design consultant and curator Giovanna Massoni as well as designer Ville Kokkonen.

Seb Verboom and Saara Renvall

LIVABLE designer Sep Verboom cooperates with traditional communities around the world. Together with NGOs, private companies and local governments, Verboom creates projects in which crafts, social engagement, design, and human relations come together beautifully. The ultimate goal is a social, ecological and qualitative revolution of the traditional industries. Verboom has recently won the Henry Van De Velde Award for Young Talent.

Saara Renvall works in her own studio in Helsinki. She is working on a variety of product design assignments, both conceptual and curational. As a designer, Renvall has not limited her field of expertise to a particular material or product group, but rather wants to express herself through design as freely and diversely as possible. Renvall is a founding member of the Finnish Imu Design collective and has participated in the curation and implementation of several young Finnish design presentations abroad and in Finland.

Ville Kokkonen and Giovanna Massoni

Giovanna Massoni is an independent art and design consultant and curator. Currently Artistic Director of RECIPROCITY design liege, the International Triennial of Design for Social Innovation of Liège in Belgium, Massoni is at the forefront of global design practice and thinking in areas including design for social inclusion, design interventions in urban spaces, and landscapes and technological impacts on design practice.

Ville Kokkonen is a Finnish industrial designer. Early in his career, he worked as a researcher at the Smart Products Research Group in UIAH, specializing in early product concept development and futures research. Since starting his own practice in 2004, Kokkonen has worked with leading companies in the field of design and technology, focusing on strategic design and product development, with clients such as Nokia, Iittala, Wärtsilä, Elixair, Ensto, Stora Enso and UPM. Kokkonen has also lectured internationally in various academic institutions and currently holds the position of Professor of Practice at Aalto University, School of Arts, Design and Architecture in Helsinki, Finland.
