Critical Tide explores the sea and inspires change. It brings together projects, studies and works that explore the sea and the potential for change through design. Critical Tide will combine research, activism and community engagement within the exhibition space.

The world’s oceans are a vast network of complex systems that remain invisible to most of us. The problems of these systems creep up on us because we cannot perceive them in our daily lives. Critical Tide makes these threats visible and also proposes solutions.

Behind the exhibition is a multi-professional team: Julia Lohmann, Pirjo Haikola, Gillian Russell and Gero Grundmann.

Critical Tide (and critical design in general) aims to increase our knowledge of societal, cultural and ethical issues through design. It pushes the boundaries of what design is, from its narrow framing of ‘Posters and Toasters’ towards a way of engaging with contemporary culture, social and ecological systems, and the interaction of stakeholders in all of them.
