Cabinets of curiosities, also known as ‘Cabinets of Wonder’, were small collections of peculiar objects which, like today’s museums, exhibited the wonders, oddities and as well as the beauty of the natural world.
In a collaboration with the master cabinetmaker Antrei Hartikainen and designer Katriina Nuutinen, Poiat will attempt to recreate this artefact with contemporary design. In contrast to a world where everything is 24/7, digitized and ephemeral, the event exhibits objects that are tactile, lasting and worth caring for.
The objects to be presented are the new cabinet collection of Poiat, which is designed by Antrei Hartikainen, and the new glass collection of Katriina Nuutinen, which will be launched at the Helsinki Design Week 2018.
Katriina Nuutinen (b. 1983) is one of the leading Finnish designers of her generation, specializing in glass and lighting. Since graduating from the School of Arts and Design at Aalto University in Helsinki in 2011, she has worked with materials such as mirror, wood, metal and cork, which has resulted in successful collaborations with producers such as Ligne Roset and Klong.
Antrei Hartikainen (b. 1991) is a master cabinetmaker and designer from Finland known for his exquisite works in wood. The award-winning pieces, including functional products and pure artworks, achieve heights of sensuality, elegance and craftsmanship that place them with the finest examples of modern Nordic carpentry.
