Helsinki Design Week was invited to present the best of the city’s designs alongside five other international design weeks.
Helsinki Design Week is happy to announce participation in the Destination exhibition presented at the Downtown Design Fair during Dubai Design Week, held 26-31 October 2015. The inaugural Dubai Design Week has invited international design weeks to showcase innovative young brands from six global cities – Helsinki, Beijing, Istanbul, Melbourne, Mexico City and San Francisco – in the exhibition. Each participating city will present a collection of three of their leading young brands, representing the spirit of the city to which they belong. Helsinki Design Week will bring to Dubai the sustainable wood furniture of Nikari, evocative lighting designs from Saas Instruments and Johanna Gullichsen’s remarkable reinterpretations of traditional Finnish textile patterns.
“We are thrilled to be hosting Helsinki Design Week at this year’s Downtown Design. Their presentation of three of the city’s most exciting brands is set to both educate and inspire our visitors; giving them an insight into the craft and innovation behind modern Finnish design. We offer a unique platform to introduce original work to buyers from across the Middle East – a rare opportunity to meet the key players in our industry, and benefit from the region’s active development. It’s a wonderfully fruitful collaboration,” says Downtown Design Fair Director Rue Kothari.
Downtown Design is the commercial centerpiece of Dubai Design Week. Now in its third edition, the Fair will be hosted for the first time at the Dubai Design District in a 6,000sqm venue that will present a total of 90 brands. CEO of SAAS Instruments, Håkan Långstedt is excited about the possibility of exhibiting their work for the first time in the Middle East.
“I am very happy about our participation. While visiting international fairs, I have noticed an increasing interest on Finnish design from the Middle East. With an area so big and varied, many kinds of design trends fit in; it seems to me that more minimalistic designs have started to establish their place, too.“
Participation in the Dubai Design Week is part of Helsinki Design Week's process of becoming increasingly interanational and globally networked.
"This is just one of the many examples of how Helsinki Design Week can create international contacts together with Finnish design brands. The network of international design weeks, founded a year ago, works as a great support in bringing Finnish design to cities around the world," says Helsinki Design Week director Kari Korkman.
