Kari Korkman, the Founder and Director of Helsinki Design Week, was awarded with the Bronze Estlander Medal on the World Design Capital Helsinki Gala night, on the 2nd of February 2012.

Helsinki Design Week 2011 encompasses over a week of events featuring new Finnish and international design,  fashion, architecture, music, and art. The main events of HDW 2011 are the To Declare exhibition and Pop Up Customs Shop, the Designmarket, and Helsinki Design Week LIVE. The To Declare exhibition will give a new view on how design is presented and includes a Pop-up Customs Shop with the same theme.  The Designmarket is the ever-popular stock sale for design and fashion. Helsinki Design Week LIVE will explore the collaboration between fashion and music.

This year, Helsinki Design Week 2011 has found a new venue, the Old Customs Warehouse in Katajanokka. The Old Customs Warehouse (in Finnish, Tulli­ ja Pakkahuone) was designed by Gustaf Nystrom in 1899. Its wooden floorboards and staircases and bare brick walls call up the feeling of another era, and the National Romantic architectural details of the windows and the towers show a valued part of Helsinki’s design history. The 900 square‐meter warehouse area on the ground floor has been opened up for exhibitions, seminars, parties, and other events.

The Old Customs Warehouse will be officially opened at the Opening Night of Helsinki Design Week on Friday, 9 September 2011.
