Countdown to DP100

1.6 Million Lives

Company: Royal Philips Electronics NV

Product: The Chulha Sampoorna stove

That’s how many die each year from illnesses caused by burning solid fuels for basic cooking and warmth. Designs such as the Chulha Sampoorna stove, designed by a team led by Stefano Marzano, help to save these lives. The stove is made to prevent smoke from leaking indoors, and is simple and inexpensive to build so that local communities can produce it for themselves.

Design elements such as a bypass tunnel, chimney chamber tablets and an easy chimney holder make it an easy to use, effective and healthy stove. These solutions come from a new focus at Philips called Philanthropy by Design, which uses design solutions to solve problems of social welfare.

2 Bold Lines

Company: Moustache

Product: Bold chair

The designers in the collective Big Game make a bold play with their foam and textile chair. The traditional lines of the chair have been bolded, as if the chair were a font in Word. Practicality has not been overlooked—the cover of the chair is like a long sock, and can be removed for washing or changing the colour.

The furniture company Moustache was created to nurture partnership and cooperation between designers. And through that, to bring out great furnishings such as this.

47 Below

Company: Helsport AS

Product: Kongsfjorden sleeping bag

Warmth is a gift. Especially when you are an extreme climber in a situation where help is far away. The Kongsfjorden sleeping bag actually is two bags in one, with a down bag and a special fibre bag, which work together to keep the sleeper warm all the way down to -47C. And when the climber starts down the mountain again and temperatures warm up, the bag is still comfortable.

The Kongsfjorden sleeping bag was given the Award for Design Excellence from the Norwegian Design Council for its innovative design.

2 Times Light

Designers: Antti Aunio ja Juuso Nissilä

Product: Valkee NPT1000 earplug light system

Double the effect of light therapy. Light therapy has been shown to significantly help depression and anxiety, but direct application is always better. The Valkee NPT1000 device resembles the kind of headphones you wear with an MP3 player, but brings light to your mind instead of music. Just wear itand feel good.

This light therapy device designed by Antti Aunio ja Juuso Nissilä revolutionises the way you experience the theraputic effect of light therapy. Instead of a bulb, the light comes from two earpieces, which direct the beams into your ears, speeding up the effect. Light-directing earpieces have been tested by Oulu University and proven to have a powerful effect against anxiety and depression.

485 Degrees

Company: BSH Kodinkoneet Oy

Product: The Gaggenau showcase

Just looking at an oven in the shop only tells you what its surface qualities look like, and how many of us really understand the technical details posted? The Gaggenau showcase presents an exploded view of the oven, which means that you can see the quality inside each part and in how each piece fits together.

This is not just opening the oven door to look inside. The entire system is laid out for display. Even smaller parts and information booklets are available in the drawers under the glass case. The number 485 degrees on the glass draws you in to the mystery of how the oven works (it's the extremely hot, self-cleaning temperature).

Clean as an A4

Company: Dyson

Product: Dyson City DC26

Dyson makes a clean sweep of the competition with this powerful beauty. The smallest vacuum in Dyson's line, the Dyson City DC26, can fit on a piece of A4 paper and weighs only 3.5 kilograms, but still is as powerful as the bigger machines. No matter how small your apartment is, you’ll have room for this little gadget.

James Dyson and his team have shrunk his revolutionary system down to 3.5 kilograms of genius. The vacuum cleaner was one machine that was always designed the same way, until James Dyson realized that there was a better way to do it. And the company is not just about industrial design—their vacuum cleaners are beautiful design objects on their own.

Design Touches 32

Company: Jordan

Product: Toothbrush

Your teeth have not been forgotten. Jordan got young artists to unleash their creativity on an entirely new product, the toothbrush. Some very interesting young designers, Anglo-French artist and stylist Carolyn Quartermaine, Danish artists Sarah Hvass and Anne Nowak, and Swedish design duo Ullenius & Edholm, whose projects have included many designs for IKEA, have sunk their teeth into making the Design Collection for Jordan Individual toothbrushes.

The toothbrush has been redesigned by a new technique that allows graphic elements to be embedded within the handle. This is no ordinary toothbrush; last year the Jordan Individual toothbrushes won the “Design Effect” prize from the Norwegian Design Council.
