Countdown to DP1001.6 Million LivesCompany: Royal Philips Electronics NV Product: The Chulha Sampoorna stove That’s how many die each year from illnesses caused by burning solid fuels for basic cooking and warmth. Designs such as the Chulha Sampoorna stove, designed by a team led by Stefano Marzano, help to save these lives. The stove is made to prevent smoke from leaking indoors, and is simple and inexpensive to build so that local communities can produce it for themselves. Design elements such as a bypass tunnel, chimney chamber tablets and an easy chimney holder make it an easy to use, effective and healthy stove. These solutions come from a new focus at Philips called Philanthropy by Design, which uses design solutions to solve problems of social welfare.
2 Bold Lines Company: Moustache Product: Bold chair The designers in the collective Big Game make a bold play with their foam and textile chair. The traditional lines of the chair have been bolded, as if the chair were a font in Word. Practicality has not been overlooked—the cover of the chair is like a long sock, and can be removed for washing or changing the colour. The furniture company Moustache was created to nurture partnership and cooperation between designers. And through that, to bring out great furnishings such as this.
47 BelowCompany: Helsport AS Product: Kongsfjorden sleeping bag Warmth is a gift. Especially when you are an extreme climber in a situation where help is far away. The Kongsfjorden sleeping bag actually is two bags in one, with a down bag and a special fibre bag, which work together to keep the sleeper warm all the way down to -47C. And when the climber starts down the mountain again and temperatures warm up, the bag is still comfortable. The Kongsfjorden sleeping bag was given the Award for Design Excellence from the Norwegian Design Council for its innovative design. |
