Hot Potatoes - The future of design in 2009

Curators gave the teams two assignments, one for each day, and six hours to design and execute them. One of the big ideas behind this arrangement was to give the public the opportunity to see how designers actually work - the permission to enter the scene of a “design-competition-gone-reality-TV”, as the main curator Tomas Träskman described it.

Another important guideline for the teams was not to create towering fantasy skyscrapers, but to focus on actual design practices revolving around social questions and future (im)possibilities.

All three teams had a unique approach towards the assignments, for example, designing a collective dress. The results differed, but the futuristic approach proved to be productive.

The challenge turned out to be tricky for the teams as well as the audience, since six hours of constant innovative and non-traditional design work for two days is exhausting both to carry out and to observe.

The video clips below, produced and directed by Oskari Pastila, present the short version of what was created during the Hot Potatoes event and how the teams worked together to build something new and innovative.
