During the Helsinki Design Week 2017, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland will host a design contest on 7–8 September 2017 in Otaniemi, Espoo. We will invite 20–30 designers to join a two-day hackathon to work on a selection of new bio-based materials (e.g. wood fibre pulp, nanocellulose, thermoplastic fibres, foamed wood fibre, thermoplastic biocomposites, etc.) developed at VTT. The goal of the hackathon is to find and demonstrate novel design solutions for industrial/commercial use.

Three finalists will get the opportunity to pitch and showcase their solutions at the Q&A on Materials of the Future event organized on 14 September 2017. The winners will be selected by a professional jury. The winning team will be awarded a prize of 3,000 euros, and the team will get an opportunity to continue working on the development of their design solution with an option for scaling up.

Apply with a team of two to three people by 18 August 2017. All applications will be reviewed, and all applicants will be informed one week after the deadline. Only 10 teams will be selected to join the Hackathon and the pre-event, where the available materials will be presented in more detail. The selected teams will get VTT’s material scientists as their mentors, who will support their work throughout the contest.
