Can you hoax a person to become healthier with clever service design? One Life Project (Yksi elämä) brings together the best people from the fields of service design and health sectors as a part of the Helsinki Design Week’s HOP: Enter installation in Kaartin maneesi on Tuesday, September 12th at 4–6pm.

During the vigorous two hours, examples and visions will be heard on how imaginative service design can help people to almost lure themselves into making healthier choices in life.

The discussion will be facilitated by Heikki Valkama, who has just left the position of chief editor in Image magazine to become the supervisor of the ‘Hyöty ja tiede’ department of YLE, the national broadcasting company. The event will be opened by the secretary general of Finnish Heart Association, Tuija Brax, who also represents on the behalf of the whole One Life Project. She will show how, with a new approach to communications, people can be inspired to invest in their own wellbeing.

Next the stage will be handed over to another panellist, who will be the research scientist Saara Pentikäinen from VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd. Pentikäinen is part of the Tuuppaus työelämässä -project, which is a part of the StopDia research project, which won first place last May, in One Life’s Liikkeelle hackathon. The idea that the team had was that one could assemble a tool kit based on various data from the working environment, which could help in luring people to exercise more, without them knowing it. For example, lift doors, which move too slowly could, according to research, encourage people to take the stairs more often.

The program then proceeds to the panel discussion, to which we have invited professionals to ponder, what will inspire a professional person to make life choices that will enhance his/her health. Can service design take a bigger role in us learning how to make healthier lifestyle choices? The discussion will be outlined by the creative director of Nordkapp, Sami Niemelä, who will give a short preview of the possibilities of service design in shaping healthy habits.

Joining Niemelä in the panel are:
  • The Secretary General of Finnish Heart Association Tuija Brax, representing One Life Project
  • Human Resources Specialist Heli Alén
  • Head of the Planning Department of the City of Helsinki Leena Silfverberg (in connection to the city bikes in Helsinki)
  • Professor Tiina Laatikainen, Promotion of Health, University of Eastern Finland

After the panel discussion we have the opportunity to hear from Professor and health economics scientist Janne Martikainen about the economic effects of health promotion from the points of view of the individual and the society.
