The Spanish Ambassador’s residence, Villa Himberg, was created by Aarne Ervin in 1954.
We have an interesting dialogue planned for us. In the Design Diplomacy dialogue, designers Andreu Carulla and Mikko Laakkonen will talk about their passions.
After graduating in Industrial Design Engineering in 2002, Catalan born Andreu Carulla started his career working at several Barcelona-based design firms and teaching at Girona’s Polytechnic University. Tired of the frantic rhythm of city life, in 2006 he moved back to his small hometown and founded the product design studio that carries his name, which is one of the most experimental design firms practicing in Spain today.
Since its inception, the studio’s work has spanned different disciplines of design. Besides its long-term collaboration with the world’s best restaurant, El Celler de Can Roca, this award-winning design firm has worked for brands such as Ricoh, Idée and Calma, among others, and its designs have been featured in many magazines, including Wallpaper, Monocle, Elle Deco and Architectural Digest.
After graduating as a musical instrument maker, Mikko Laakkonen studied furniture design at Kymenlaakso University of Applied Sciences and later received his Master’s degree from the University of Art and Design in Helsinki. After working in design and architecture firms for several years, Mikko founded Studio Mikko Laakkonen in 2004. The Studio offers product design services, with the main focus on everyday items. Mikko’s designs have been on display in several exhibitions around Europe, the United States, China and Japan.
He has been awarded a number of international and national prizes, including the German Design Award (2017), the Turkey Design Award (2016), a Reddot design award honourable mention (2016), Chicago Athenaeum’s Good Design Award (2016, 2015 & 2010), Muuuz International Awards 2014, Finnish Designer Awards ’14: Furniture Designer Of The Year, Reddot: best of the best design award (2013) Reddot design award (2012), and the Young Designer of the Year prize (2009).
